David J talks about Bauhaus’s “1234” & “Exquisite Corpse”

David-JHere’s an interesting tidbit – a question from Jason Scott to David J via Facebook.

Do you have, or know where I can find some background information on Bauhaus “1234” (B-side to Passion of Lovers)? I’ve been obsessed with this song since 1988 and I’m convinced there is quite a story to be told…

There’s some amazing early techniques of sampler and drum machine use on this track!!!

David J Haskins:
Yes, Jason. I suggested to the band that we make a track based on the Surrealist idea of ‘The Exquisite Corpse’ whereby each artist contributes towards a composite figure by drawing on a folded section of paper, continuing the line onto the next section so that the next guy is able to continue the line.

The idea was to apply something like this to a recording. We prerecorded the beat and then each of us went in separately to lay down his section. ( Without listening to the previous contribution. )

We each had four tracks at our disposal. We repeated this experiment on the ‘Sky’s Gone Out’ album. That track was appropriately entitled ‘Exquisite Corpse’.
